Welcome to The Making of You. I’m Alexandria, founder of The Mastery Project and Your Transformation Hub, and this podcast is dedicated to the whys and ways to transform the mundane into the magical, the ‘doable’ into successful, enjoyable and purposeful, all while having fun becoming the architect of your own life.

Well, let’s dive in. Today’s episode is 5 Ways to vanquish doom scrolling. So my number one is what do I mean by doom scrolling? Well, it’s quite the buzzword at the moment and of course it’s highlighting our particular addiction to tech and of course mostly to our phones and to looking at particular items that are going to keep us scrolling and scrolling and not necessarily committing to any anything and a lot of people might argue not necessarily learning anything either.

So today I want to be looking at why we do it. So fundamentally, my number one is that our world has been through and I believe it’s coming out the other side now.

But we have been through some pretty polarized years in the last 10. And what do I mean by polarity? Well, I mean increasing degrees of extreme in our living experience rather than choosing to reinforce balance and working to keep that balance point in our lives. So as a collective and as individuals, we could have felt that we were kind of battling against very extreme news or very extreme political views or religious views, or just generally our life kind of getting stretched in to that polarized or more extreme place.

So doom scrolling is a bit of a symptom if you like, or a bit of of an activity associated with that.

And personally, I believe if we can say to ourselves that we actually are recognizing that drama, crisis, that kind of media, ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ mentality isn’t helping us, then that is going to be putting quite a lot of pressure under doom scrolling foundation. So giving us the understanding within ourselves why we need to move on now. Yeah, is it this simple that it’s a fearful condition and we’re focusing on fearful items or dramatic or polarized items that are draining our energy and not supporting us? Pretty much. It’s as simple as that.

So doom scrolling is going to be subjects that aren’t particularly high vibe or high frequency or what I would say supportive in what they’re conveying or the journey that we’re going on, sort of reading about them or looking at a combination of the videos, the pictures and the articles.

So for me, my number one is please be kind to yourself. Please recognize if with your scrolling that you are actually going down in vibe. You’re feeling drained, you’re feeling more and more depressed, you’re feeling more and more hopeless.

And just simply, simply choose differently.

Now why I’m going to move to number two. Why is it quite a lot of the time hard to disconnect from that drain or from the drama or from the crisis that’s in front of you?

Well, it’s simply because in my number two, it is in some ways easier to believe.

Now gosh, I’m not contradicting myself, but I do believe our world in some respects is presenting quite a unself loving picture of the Humanity naturally and normally is. And saying that’s life, suck it up. And you’re going to have to deal with for example, that degree of extreme, that degree of absence of Humanity, absence of love, absence of good news and absence of hope.

Now I beg to differ. In number two, I don’t believe that we have to put up with anything. And I don’t believe in our world that this particular sort of endless fearful foundation is either normal or actually fundamentally natural.

So just remember we’re going back to source here in number two. And if you want to go to the source of the addiction, it’s simply because we’ve learned to do it. We’ve learned to look around outside of ourselves and say, oh, this is natural, this is normal. So we’ve kind of got sucked in to a little bit of herd instinct there or to everyone else is doing it and it appears that they’re not particularly upset about it, so why should I be? And I’ll just fall in with it or I will literally go numb and not be choosing.

So my number two is if you want to break any addiction, all right, you’ve got to ask yourself simple questions like how is this activity contributing to my balance point? What can I do to basically replace it? And also is it self loving, is it joyous, Is it giving me options and alternatives in my life? And I don’t think we can say that doom scrolling is going to help on any of those levels. So the answer is probably going to be no in many different ways.

So simply with number two, if you want to move out of that phase, then you’ve got to say no in your heart and choose differently, all right? And recognize and celebrate the self loving capability that we have at our fingertips in the center of our vibe, in the center of our true and unique and wondrous and unlimited potential is we’ve got to honour it by choosing it.

And yeah, it’s easy to pick up a Phone and just scroll bad news or go down the rabbit holes about how corrupt or how unhelpful people are being in our general communities or around the world. But it’s also to recognize that as I said, how’s that helping you? It’s actually not of service and it’s not supporting you being in a loving and balanced self loving vibe.

So my number two is very simple. Choose differently. All right? So like anyone would say about an addiction, choose differently. And pulling yourself out of that addiction, I know, is going to require a degree of repetitive balance and repetitive choosing. So what I’m going to do now is move to number three.

So my number three with doom scrolling is please honour yourself by getting alternative activities.

Or literally you feel, gosh, I’ve always got to have my phone with me, that you have the phone but you’ve put it on silent or you have another activity that you can do while that you know, if you needed the phone for work or you need to be in constant contact as a parent, that you’ve got the phone but you’re choosing to actively pursue a different activity rather than kind of lazy time with self, which is when we’re not choosing consciously and we’re not actually choosing something that’s spent beneficial or self loving.
So as far as I’m concerned, I’d rather that you have 40 Wink sleep if that’s your inclination, rather than doom scroll. Because when we sleep at least we are giving ourselves permission to rebalance and potentially we are refueling us or at least at the very minimum, we’re not going to be draining ourselves or scattering our attention into things that aren’t raising our vibration, aren’t supporting us.

Okay? So yeah, number three, find an alternative. And you might even need to write that down as an authority for you. Not because you can’t remember what it is, but simply to say to yourself, I am choosing and I’m committing. And when we write things down, we often connect with our subtle senses, for example, our subtle energy centers like our pineal gland. And it is a way to reinforce our truth and to reinforce what we truly believe or what we’re kind of wading, reading through, shall we say, what isn’t self loving in order to get to what is. So when we write it down for ourselves, it’s actually very simple. It’s reflecting that commitment back to us. And it’s kind of like writing rather than digitally typing. All right? Writing is actually accessing that pineal gland, that commitment, our heart center and the benefits of an alternative activity that’s going to support us.

Alrighty. Okay, so number four.

Well, I think for doom scrolling we also need to look at our natural inquisitiveness.

So as human beings, we do want to find out the answer. We do want to go on journeys of discovery. So what I recommend to people is instead of doom scrolling, choose a topic that you want to move into, all right? That’s going to be uplifting for you, that is resonant and relevant for you and is going to put some beautiful investment, some enthusiasm, some connectedness into your life and you’re going to be able to build on that or you’re going to feel positive in the sense of uplifted. You’re going to feel that your consciousness is improving, is raising, is heart aligned as a result.

Now, for a lot of people, that particular choice can be a journey in itself because they can say, gosh, I actually have spent quite a lot of time focusing on what doesn’t really serve. And so I’ve kind of got used to that being normal rather than saying to myself, wow, I am not in balance and it’s not helping me, so I need to move back.

So that journey is often started within ourselves. And so to sit quietly, you could call it meditation, you can call it being with yourself, you can call it listening to your inner intuitive conversation.

All of this is going to help you get back into what is self nurturing, what is self loving, what is going to contribute to helping you get that heart, mind alignment. You know me with all my episodes, I’m probably always going to say heart, mind alignment at some point.

So when you are in the being space, all right, when you’re dedicating to listening within, it’s not doing nothing. You’re actually giving yourself permission to listen to alternatives. You’re turning the volume down on your external world and you’re stepping away, of course, from the devices that can suck you in to going down those rabbit holes.

Now the reason I’m talking about inner inquiry rather than the external sort of truth hunt, if you will, is because the inner aspects of us always want us to find a loving way and to support us in raising our consciousness.

And so choosing that we’re going to be in a space as long as we’re in our heart center and connected with that infinite unique connection that we all have that we’re going to be able to plug into all of the answers that we’re seeking. So if you do want to go and understand in greater depth anything in your life, then those inner nudges and inner Prompts that you’re going to develop by listening to yourself can be incredibly constructive in in moving forward and in exciting and igniting a new flame of enthusiasm and of optimism and hope in your life.

So we do know doom scrolling isn’t going to do that, all right? It’s going to lower your vibe or perhaps even make you feel a bit hopeless.

So the inner inquiry isn’t sort of flim flam. It actually is incredibly constructive for you to hear and develop what you truly want. For example, the simple listening to yourself about making daily choices, building your confidence and building your heart. Mind alignment, the balance between feeling all of the energy and what you truly want and making the plans, the lists, the day to day admin in order to create the reality that you truly want.

Alrighty, so number five. Well, one of the simplest ways to deal with doom scrolling is to actively choose to detach.

Now, I recommend for a lot of people that they take breaks. I’ve always said to my students that it’s really important, of course, to listen intently, to be in the space of learning. But for most people, that can kind of fall off the learning curve literally by about 25 minutes to 30 minutes. Most people can’t literally concentrate fully and completely beyond 45 minutes.

So I do recommend that you find small and short activities that you can call upon. When you are, for example, having a break from work, going to lunch, or the time that you would have spent on doom scrolling, you choose activities that are short but are very fulfilling and helpful. Now, sometimes that can simply be taking lunch when you haven’t been, because some people get on their phones and they literally are looking at their phones as entertainment or as a sense of break and actually they forget to eat. All right? So for me, really make the effort to make your lunch or to find a nutritious break in your day. All right? Rather than sort of jumping from sugar snack to sugar snack, if you’re looking for a sort of sense of high that’s healthy, then you might want to go and walk in nature. Because Mother nature is in her natural and divine divine presence, a beautiful re energizing place. She’ll help you if you have been feeling low. She’ll help you come back, at least to the very center of yourself. And that in itself can be uplifting.

So find a short selection of activities that you can vary in your week and before you know it, you’ll be spending time investing in yourself doing those activities rather than doom scrolling.

So it is a process, it’s a journey. But honour that inner inquiry rather than falling into the dramas of outer inquiry which I think we can all say in truth. Are we ever going to find the full and complete absolute truth? Probably not.

So I’d rather you spent your beautiful energy in discerning ways to support yourself.
